Quick answer
Postpartum belly binding with a bengkung means wrapping the tummy in cloth or a binder, a Malay confinement tradition for support and comfort. There is no official duration; many mothers wear one for a few weeks. Never tie it too tight, remove it if breathing is hard or skin chafes, and after a C-section ask your doctor first.

Bengkung after birth: 6 things to know first
- 1A bengkung is a traditional belly wrap, called postpartum belly binding in English.
- 2Traditional (wrapped, laced) or modern (velcro, hooks): fit matters more than type.
- 3No official duration; in one Malaysian survey, mothers wore it for about 29 days.
- 4Never too tight: you should breathe deeply, sit and breastfeed comfortably.
- 5No strong evidence it makes the tummy smaller; pelvic floor and core exercises have better evidence.
- 6After a C-section: doctor’s approval first; keep tight wraps and herbs off the wound.
What is a bengkung? (Bengkung in English)
A bengkung, also called barut, is a cloth wrapped around the tummy and waist during confinement (berpantang). It usually goes alongside postnatal massage, bertungku and herbal baths.
In English, it is called belly binding or a postpartum belly wrap; the medical version is an abdominal binder. A Malaysian study describes it as “the traditional body wrap, belly binding, or girdle”.
Traditional or modern bengkung: what is the difference?
UiTM design researchers (2015) record traditional and modern types, all based on a rectangle of cloth:
- Long bengkung (bengkung Jawa): long cotton cloth wrapped in layers from the hips to under the breasts, knotted at the front; you usually need help.
- Laced bengkung (tali kasut): thin cotton with eyelets, laced with one long cord like a shoe.
- Bengkung roda: cotton with 12 ties on both sides, fastened one by one.
- Modern binder: elastic, with velcro or hooks, or girdle pants; quick to put on, but the size must be right.
Choose by comfort and fit, not brand: a binder that is too small presses all day.
How many metres is a bengkung?
There is no standard size. The UiTM record lists a long bengkung of up to 15 metres, and an older source it cites describes a barut about 5.5 metres long and a quarter of a metre wide. Laced and roda styles come in S to XL.
What tradition says and what research shows
Many mothers feel supported and comfortable in a bengkung, but we found no peer-reviewed study on the traditional bengkung; research looks at modern binders.
| What tradition says | What the evidence says | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|
| Supports the tummy and waist | Binder studies after caesareans are mixed on pain in the first 48 hours. | Stop if pain worsens. |
| Makes the tummy look neater | No strong evidence on tummy size; the muscle gap usually returns to normal by 8 weeks (NHS). | Pelvic floor and deep stomach exercises. |
| Supports separated stomach muscles | Review of 13 trials (2025): exercise beat binding for the gap below the belly button. | See a doctor or physiotherapist. |
| Tighter works better | Binders may raise pressure inside the abdomen; the effect on the pelvic floor is unknown. | Firm but moderate. |
| Param or tapel under the wrap | Skin products can cause contact dermatitis: itchy, blistered, dry or cracked skin (NHS). | Keep off wounds; rinse if skin reacts. |
Sources: Lin 2024, Di Mascio 2021, Abdullah 2025, Madison 2021 and NHS. A bengkung is a comfort practice, with no promise of results for your tummy, womb or muscles.
Will a bengkung make my tummy smaller?
There is no strong evidence. According to the NHS, the gap between the two stomach muscles usually returns to normal by the time your baby is 8 weeks old. It recommends pelvic floor exercises (up to 10 repetitions, at least 3 times a day) and deep stomach exercises, with no sit-ups or planks at first.
If the gap is still obvious at 8 weeks, see a doctor, who may refer you to a physiotherapist. A bengkung does not correct diastasis recti.
How long should you wear a bengkung, and how many hours a day?
No medical guideline sets the days or hours. In Malay custom, a bengkung is often worn through the 44-day confinement. In a 2019 survey in Bagan Serai, Perak, 71% of mothers using traditional care wore one, starting at about day 8 and wearing it for an average of 29 days. That describes practice at one rural clinic, not a recommendation.
No study covers hours per day. For comparison, an NHS physiotherapy leaflet for separated stomach muscles uses an elastic support (tubigrip) only if needed, and only for long periods on your feet. Practical pointers:
- Wear it when active, if it feels comfortable.
- Take it off at least once a day to bathe and check your skin.
- Loosen it to eat or breastfeed.
- Stop if you feel pain, numbness or chafing.
Are postpartum wraps safe? How to wear a bengkung safely
A bengkung should never hurt. You must still be able to breathe deeply, sit, eat and breastfeed comfortably.
Elastic binders did not affect lung function in surgical studies (meta-analysis, 2021), but a cloth tied as tight as possible is different: if you cannot take a deep breath, it is too tight.
Binders may also raise pressure inside the abdomen, and the effect on a pelvic floor that has just been through birth is unknown (Madison, 2021). Keep the lower wraps moderate and continue pelvic floor exercises.
Wear it over a thin cotton layer. If param or tapel goes on first, watch for contact dermatitis: itchy, blistered, dry or cracked skin (NHS). See our param, pilis and tapel guide.
Tip from the Roseville team
Before you start, tell whoever helps you how you gave birth (and your doctor’s approval after a C-section), any skin allergy to herbs, and when you want it off.
The bengkung in Roseville confinement packages
At Roseville Confinement Villa & Spa, Bangi Gateway, the bengkung is included in confinement packages of 7 days or longer, with tungku, param, pilis, tapel, a foot spa and a traditional full-body massage. Our daily herbal care (bengkung, herbal baths and warm compress) follows tradition, and our team explains each practice.
After a C-section, bring your doctor’s instructions. Every package includes four confinement meals a day, 24-hour care by a female team and a private room with its own bathroom. Your husband can stay at no extra charge. Still comparing a confinement centre with confinement at home?

After a C-section, when can you wear a bengkung?
There is no fixed date: ask your doctor first. While the wound is new, the NHS advises loose clothes and an NHS leaflet says to put no products on the wound, so keep tight wraps, param and tapel off it. Binder studies after caesareans are mixed (Lin 2024; Di Mascio 2021; a Thai trial of 180 mothers). Full answer: confinement after a C-section.
When to remove it and see a doctor
Remove the bengkung and get medical advice if you notice any of these. After a C-section, the NHS says pus or a swollen leg may signal infection or a clot.
See a doctor urgently if
- Breathlessness or chest pain, even after loosening it.
- Severe or worsening tummy pain.
- Heavy vaginal bleeding.
- A C-section wound that is redder, swollen or leaking pus.
- Swelling or pain in one lower leg.
Also see a doctor if blisters or a rash do not settle, if leaking urine or a heavy feeling between the vagina and anus persists, or if the muscle gap is still obvious at 8 weeks (NHS). Raise these at your one-month clinic check-up (MyGOV). Roseville is not a clinic or hospital; our team can help arrange an appointment.

Frequently asked questions
What is bengkung in English?
In English, a bengkung is usually called belly binding or a postpartum belly wrap; the medical version used after surgery is an abdominal binder. A Malaysian study describes it as a traditional body wrap, belly binding or girdle; search for postpartum belly binding.
When can I start wearing a bengkung after a normal birth?
There is no official guideline. Mothers in the Perak survey started at about day 8; in a US survey, 71% of those who gave a start time planned to begin within 2 days. Start when comfortable, keep it moderate, and ask your doctor if you had complications.
Will a bengkung make my tummy smaller?
There is no strong evidence. The NHS says the stomach muscle gap usually returns to normal by 8 weeks, and pelvic floor and deep stomach exercises help reduce it. A 2025 review of 13 trials found exercise worked better than binding for the gap below the belly button.
After a C-section, when can I wear a bengkung?
There is no fixed date. Get your doctor’s approval first, especially if the wound is still dressed, painful or weeping. If approved, wear it loosely and keep pressure, param and tapel off the wound. Binder studies after caesareans measured pain, not tummy shape.
Is the bengkung included in Roseville confinement packages?
Yes, in packages of 7 days or longer, alongside tungku, param, pilis, tapel, a foot spa and a traditional full-body massage. Packages run from 3 to 44 days; book a free villa visit at Bangi Gateway to ask our team.
